Dear Society Members and all the Children – Warm Greetings to Everyone!

As you all know that we live in a democratic country like India and it’s important to embrace democracy as a virtue.  Today as a citizen of this country, I am going to sensitize you all on the topic democracy vs. dictatorship. Both the terms democracy as well as dictatorship are applied in different scenarios and countries altogether. Some countries follow a democratic pattern while others follow authoritarian rule, which is very similar to dictatorship. We all hear that democracy is the best form of government through newspapers and media.

Democracy is considered to be rule by the people for the people, so it is rightly stated as government in its best form. When India gained independence many other countries questioned that despite diversity how are we going to unite India and make it a democracy, but with our first elections in free and fair manner proved the entire world that India could sustain a democracy.

We should be proud of the fact that we all have kept alive the true spirit of democracy in India.  We as citizens are able to elect our representatives who represent our views and interests to the government of our country. All individuals and groups are equal before law in a democratic setup and are given freedom to speech and expression.

During elections we all have choices in electing our representatives as India is a multiparty democracy which basically refers to that we have various parties and a choice to elect the best among them. Various newspapers have editorial columns where editors and even authors can raise their opinion if they feel something wrong about the government.

Even media channels these days hold debates where people speak their mind despite it being against the government, thus this aspect of democracy is most varied and can never be found in a dictatorial country as in the latter an individual cannot speak his/her mind as the government does not give them the freedom to speech and expression.

Every country follows its own religion, but a democratic country is one which allows its citizens to preach and practice any religion. There is nothing deemed as public and private sphere which is very opposite in an authoritarian country where people are supposed to practice their religion privately and in public they need to follow the state’s rules and procedures.

In the end it’s important to understand that if we need to live our lives freely and hassle free then we should be adopting democracy even in our private lives where we shouldn’t interfere in each other’s matters and should respect everyone’s opinion.

I hope I have made everyone present here especially the children aware about merits of a democracy and how we should respect our country which has sustained itself to be a true democracy and has provided every human being the right to dignity and self-respect.

Democracy vs. Dictatorship Speech 2

Hon’ble Principal, Vice Principal, Dear Teachers and My loving students- Warm Greetings to all of you!

Today I, Mrs. Apoorva Gupta, the class teacher of XII (A) would like to deliver a speech on a topic which is very appropriate for the current scenario, which is democracy vs. dictatorship. Being a teacher of the humanities section I have always taught my students about the relevance of democracy which is absolutely opposite to a dictator’s rule.

Until and unless you students won’t understand the differences and similarities between democracy and dictatorship you won’t be able to respect India as a democratic country. We as citizens of our country should also pay respect to the democratic structure and processes that exists in our country today which helps us in achieving development in a free and fair manner. The varied differences between democracy and dictatorship are categorized as:

• Electoral System: In a democratic system elections are held in a fair manner and everything ranging from an election manifesto to the papers of the representatives standing in the elections are scrutinized. This clearly reveals one fact that not everyone can stand in elections in a democratic setup, one needs to be eligible for that position. While in a country which is ruled by a dictator or a king not necessarily can hold elections in a fair manner. We often hear that elections in an authoritarian country are often rigged.
• Rights and Duties: A democratic country ensures that every citizen is equal before law and they are given certain rights which people can utilize to develop their personalities and live in a free environment without any restrictions. In a dictatorial country people are not paid attention and not given rights. Right to life and liberty which is the basic or the fundamental right of the Indian constitution are sometimes not even provided to the people living in a dictatorship ruled country.
• Freedom: Every individual and groups in a democratic country are given the freedom to speech and expression which gives them the right to raise their opinion which might be in consonance with the government or could be against them. Both the form of opinions is acceptable in a democratic setup while in a dictatorship, citizens of that country are not given basic rights and the government neglects the opinion of the people and the rulers are never accountable to their citizens.

• Revolt and Revolutions: Wherever people are allowed to raise their opinions freely then there are bound to be revolts against certain rules applied by the government. Especially in a democratic setup when people are not satisfied with a government ruling then they often come on the streets to revolt against them so as to pressurize the government so that they take back their ruling. In a dictatorship people don’t have the basic rights leave aside the power to question the government and whoever does that, is punished to the extent that they don’t repeat the same mistake next time.

Thus, I leave this upon you to choose which form of government is the best and which needs to be followed so that people can live and work united.

Democracy vs. Dictatorship Speech 3

Respected Principal, Vice Principal, Teachers and My Dear Students – Warm Greetings to everyone!

I would like to thank everybody for giving me an opportunity to speak on the topic democracy vs. dictatorship. I, Atul Sinha, the alumni of the school feel privileged to give you an insightful view about democracy especially the case of India.

Before moving on to anything else it’s important to understand what democracy actually means and how India is able to sustain its democratic setup despite certain failures and how we too experienced a brief phase of dictatorial rule in our country which ultimately made us realize the importance of democracy.

India pre independence was never a democratic country. We all know that we were ruled by the Britishers for almost a century. Initially we liked the fact that our country was ruled by someone and they would take our country to a certain level of development but our leaders were quite aware that Britishers would only exploit our country and the people living in it. It’s quite depressing but true to the fact that our previous generations present during the reign of Britishers were exploited and they had to follow the rules and procedures laid by them.

In 1947 with various revolts we certainly got independence and we all were left free to make our own decisions which were best for our country’s development and growth. In the early years of independence lots of doubts were raised against the Indian government that how and through what process we would keep our country united despite huge disparities and diversities in our country, but the first election in India proved everyone wrong and India since then has been able to sustain a democratic setup.

The first party to rule our country and start economic growth was the Congress party and their era was also termed as the “Congress System”. This system clearly revealed that there was only one party that ruled our country but still we had all our rights and duties placed in the constitution.  After the era of the Congress party our democratic processes laid down various other parties through which people would have choices in electing their own representatives. This gave freedom to people to choose whom they felt would be the best to govern our country.

From 1975-1977 our country witnessed a brief period of authoritarian rule which came to be known as the “Emergency Period” under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Various rights and liberties were suspended during this period. Newspapers and magazines were banned so that they couldn’t write anything negative against the government during that period. We as citizens were not allowed to approach the courts even if or fundamental rights were violated. This meant that the right to constitutional remedies was suspended. Various leaders were jailed for raising their opinion against the government and there was no right to form associations or hold meetings during that period as it would escalate negatives against the government.

At the end I would just like to say that a brief period of emergency made us realize how important democracy is and we thus should value living in a democratic country.

Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen – Thank you for becoming a part of this panel discussion organized to review which system is better democracy or dictatorship.

Before moving to any conclusion about the best and worst it’s important to give arguments to prove something true. Democracy is that form of the government where the representatives are elected directly and indirectly elected through a system of elections. In case of India too we follow certain guidelines which make us eligible to survive as a democratic country.

The basic requirement involves written rules in the constitution which also considered being the supreme document and everybody needs to follow it. A democratic country needs to meet certain basic human rights which include not only fundamental rights but also fundamental duties which are enshrined in the constitution. It’s important that in a democratic setup every citizen of that country should be equal before law and shouldn’t be discriminated on the basis of caste, religion etc.

It requires that there should be decentralization of power in a democracy and there should be varied organs of the state where power should be devolved. In India the power is divided between the Legislature, Executive and the Judiciary where judiciary is considered to be the watchdog of democracy. Indian government ensures that our country is rid of corruption and poverty so that we can better govern ourselves and improve development and economic growth. Democracy has certain advantages which include:

1. There can be modifications in the rules and procedures which can be negotiated peacefully among the representatives of our country.
2. Government gets elected by the people for a period of time so they also remain accountable to their citizens and in case of any wrong doings every party in power realizes that they wouldn’t come back in the next tenure if people are not satisfied with their work and governance.
3. The most important advantage of a democracy is that citizens feel a sense of responsibility when they elect their government or representatives. We are given a choice so that we can select the best representative who would be able to sustain our government and would fulfill the interests and wishes of its citizens.

These requirements and advantages bring true value to a democracy and country following it. Despite all this some countries follow dictatorship either forcefully or by choice. There is no separation of power rather it is only the dictator or one person who rules that country and is not even accountable to the people. Dictatorship is totally opposite to democracy. There are more disadvantages in a dictatorship rather advantages:

1. People are not consulted in any way regarding rules and policies. Those are just enforced on the citizens.
2. Public in certain circumstances feel suppressed and are made vulnerable to raise a revolution against the government.
3. A dictatorship is mostly ruled by military rather than by ordinary personnel.
4. There are bound to be conflicts in a dictatorial country which makes them unstable.
